The Band

The New Vintage Big Band was founded in 1991 to provide an outlet for the performance of modern of big-band jazz. Led by local trumpeter / bandleader Jack Taylor, the band plays contemporary arrangements of jazz originals and standards. The band’s library covers a diverse range of musical styles, including those referred to as “swing”, “straight-ahead”, “rock”, “funk”, “fusion”, and “latin” – and everything in between. Groups like NEW VINTAGE exist in part to show that big-band jazz is not dead – the music lives on, thanks to a small minority of dedicated musicians committed to performing it.

The Leader Comments

For many people, the words “big band” bring memories of popular music from the 1930s and 1940s. I formed NEW VINTAGE because of what “big band” means to me – an exciting and dynamic musical art not limited to musical styles 60 years old. While I have a deep and abiding respect for “big band” history, NEW VINTAGE is different – we use the classic repertoire of big bands from the 1950s and 1960s (Count Basie, Woody, Herman, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, etc.) as a basis for showing that the music of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s also works beautifully in the “big band” format.

The fact is – “big band” is simply a band that’s big. Big enough to include 18 of the best musicians Kansas City has to offer. And big enough to paint the unique colors and textures of sound that only a band of this size can give to this great, timeless music.

The Chance To Join

We are always looking for musicians to improve the band. Interested musicians should have experience both on their instrument and in this musical format, as well as their own equipment. Ability to sight-read is required; ability to improvise is a plus.

Membership in the band should be considered a way to have fun, express yourself musically, and display your talents to other musicians and to the public – not as a way to make lots of money.

We would like to release a commerical recording in the future, if the right talent and commitment is there. Prior to that, we would like to perform in public on a monthly basis. We plan to use our demo recordings to help secure these opportunities.

The band’s library numbers in excess of 300 arrangements representing the very best that this music has to offer. It is generally regarded as one of the better (if not the best) such collections in the Kansas City area. The majority of the music is extremely challenging and requires a high level of musicianship to perform.

We strive continually to attain that high level of musicianship, and to that end, rehearse regularly on a weekly basis. Rehearsals are held on Sunday evenings, since this is a time when most of the musicians are not committed elsewhere.

If you are interested in having the band perform, the following points should be kept in mind:

1. Plan your dates as far in advance as possible. Have an alternate date or two in mind. The biggest obstacle to scheduling a performance by a group this size is ensuring that all of the musicians are available at the same time.

2. We will perform a minimum of 60 minutes of music. No engagements involving smaller time allotmenets will be accepted.

3. The performance must be adequately publicized by the scheduling individual, group, or organization. The band maintains a mailing list for this purpose which we can make available to the scheduling individual or group. The bigger the audience, the more enjoyable the performance, and the greater the chance of the band accepting the engagement.

Contact Jack Taylor at (913) 438-NVBB to discuss performance possibilities in greater detail.
